Location: 1401 Kiefer Creek Road, Ballwin, MO 63021

Amenities: several picnic sites, two picnic shelters, playground, fishing, boating, trails, volleyball

Playground ground cover: wood chips

Update 11/29/11: The first time we visited Castlewood State Park there were several safety hazards, but upon being alerted of the issues, all repairs have been made. Woo hoo! The review and photos below have been updated to reflect the repairs.

Castlewood park is a great place to hike and enjoy nature. The playground is situated between the 2 picnic shelters, and has has 3 slides, 2 sling swings, 2 baby swings, and a tire swing. There slides vary in size for younger kids up to older kids, there's a steering wheel (not sure why but my kid LOVES these), and a tic-tac-toe board.

Please be VERY careful if you choose to swim in the Meramec River at Castlewood. There have been quite a few people who have drowned in the part of the river in the park in recent years. Because of this, I have not labeled this post as "swimming" in the search. There is a creek that the road goes over, before you get to the playground that is ok for swimming. It is just a few inches in most parts and 12-18 inches in the deepest parts.

  1. Just an FYI on the creek at Castlewood:

We live near this park and love it for hiking, but we aren't willing to take a chance in the creek (or the river, of course, where people sadly drown every summer).
