Playground ground cover: pea gravel and grass

Leonard Park has 2 play structures, one for toddlers and one for older kids. There is also an old "circus wagon" metal and wood climber, and a ball funnel (which I find odd to have in the middle of the playground, usually you'd find these on asphalt where you can bounce the ball while playing). The swing sets are over grass, with no safety surface below the swings (failure to have a safety surface below swings not meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines for public playgrounds). There are 2 baby swings and 4 sling swings (but below 2 sling swings, besides being just grass, there were large puddles. The slides and play structures are otherwise in good shape.

Due to the pea gravel ground cover, another child was playing on the equipment in her socks, because she kept getting the gravel in her shoes. I don't recommend letting your children play barefoot or in socks at a public playground because of the risk of foot injury from stepping on something.
